Every year in July, we organize Summer Expedition . Executive Committee members need to travel to our subsidy sites to conduct Home Visits. Through visiting students' families in person, we gain a first-hand understanding of their family's financial situation, and hence, identifying the students who are in greatest need of financial assistance . During the visits, we engage directly with students and their families to know more about the local living conditions and gaining a deeper insights into the realities of rural education in Chinese Mainland. Additionally, we conduct follow-up visits to both previous and current funded students at the funded locations, ensuring that every donation is used effectively while continuing to deliver warmth and care.
This is a volunteer teaching program launched by CEA in 2015. Every year in Summer and Winter, CEA's Executive members will lead a group of HKU volunteers to go to schools in the Chinese Mainland for volunteer teaching. Volunteer teachers deliver diverse and engaging lessons to students, to help them broaden their horizons, as well as to improve their critical thinking and cultivate their personal growth, leaving them with cherished memories. At the same time, we aims to raise public awareness of the challenges faced by rural education and encourage greater community involvement in supporting these students.

The first Summer Camp was held in 2015 in collaboration with Guizhou University.
HKU students joined hands with volunteers from Guizhou University to deliver ten days of teaching in mountainous schools, creating invaluable shared experiences between Hong Kong and rural students.
The Summer Camp was held from 26 May to 1 June 2024 in Dongzhang Town, Fuqing City, Fujian Province. A total of 28 participants (11 committee members and 17 volunteer teachers) successfully completed the one week volunteer teaching program. The event promoted genuine two-way exchange and successfully achieved its educational goals.
From 2 to 14 June 2025, we combined our Summer Camp with the Expedition program for the first time and carried out a fruitful educational support experience at Wangshang Primary School in Lihu Yao Ethnic Township, Nandan County, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. During the 9-day volunteer teaching period, 18 HKU volunteers successfully conducted lessons in science experiments, English speaking, and art creation, inspiring creativity and self-confidence among Yao students. Meanwhile, we provided financial assistance to 31 students from economically disadvantaged families. The camp not only offered HKU students valuable teaching experience and deepened their understanding of Yao culture and rural education, in the Chinese Mainland and the Yao ethnic culture, but also promoted educational exchanges and youth interactions between the two places.

Winter Expedition is one of our annual voluntary teaching trips. In 2014, We were glad to organize it with Chi Heng Foundation to have voluntary teaching in Zhoukou city, Henan Province. In 2015, we went to our currently subsidizing region Jian He County, Guizhou Province to have a 5 days voluntary teaching.

Winter Expedition 2016 was successfully carried out from 24-30/12/2016 in Jianhe County, Guizhou Province with participants from HKU. Voluntary teaching and home visiting were conducted, aiming to bring love and care to the students in the Chinese Mainland rural areas. Meanwhile, participants could rethink the education system policy in the Chinese Mainland rural areas by observing the lessons and chatting with students. Apart from compulsory lessons such as Chinese and English, participants also designed other interesting lessons such as science with experiments demonstration and arts lessons. Students had a lot of fun with these brand new lessons and topics and furthermore, they could apply what they had learnt in daily life. It is reflected that the expedition enabled participants to rethink the meaning of voluntary work and the malpractice in the Chinese Mainland rural areas education system.
Christmas Rural In-depth Trip
The 2017 Winter Expedition Team successfully took place from 24/12/2017-01/01/2018. A total of 45 members of us carried out a 9-day volunteer teaching program and home visits at Duimen Mountain Village Primary School in Zhenfeng County, Guizhou Province. We also organized a cultural and artistic performance to help rural students showcase their talents. Both the rural primary school students and volunteers benefited greatly and formed a deep bond with each other. This activity further allowed students from HKU and senior secondary schools in Hong Kong to observe the development of rural education in the Chinese Mainland. By interacting with local families and students, they gained an understanding of the difficulties rural students face, which in turn prompted them to reflect on the meaning of education and the flaws in the existing system.
